How to Make an Hourglass Quilt Block

Hello and Welcome,

Today I would like to share with you one of my favorite quilt blocks. There are a couple of reasons I like this block. First of all, it is a very easy block to construct, and second, you get two blocks when you are finished, which of course saves you time! So here we go.

To make an Hourglass quilt block, you will first need to select two contrasting fabric squares of equal size. These squares will form the basis of your Hourglass block.

Step One - Begin by placing the two fabric squares right sides together. This alignment is crucial to ensure that the Hourglass block's design comes out correctly.

Next, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the wrong side of one of the squares. This line will serve as a guideline for sewing.

After drawing the diagonal line, sew a quarter-inch seam on both sides of the line. This stitching will create two parallel seams that will divide the fabric into four smaller triangles.

Once you have sewn the seams, carefully cut along the drawn diagonal line to separate the triangles. Press the seams toward the darker fabric.

Lay the triangles together with the opposite fabrics touching, light fabric on dark fabric.

As before, draw a diagonal line down the middle of the triangles and sew a quarter-inch seam on both sides of the line.

Cut on the diagonal line and you will have two Hourglass Quilt Blocks. See, quick and easy!

Happy Quilting,

Jen
