Quilt As You Go Strip Placemats with Silver Jubilee Fabric

Updated: Dec 13, 2024

Enjoy whipping up these quick and easy placemats to add some creativity and personality to your table. I used Silver Jubilee fabric from Maywood Studio for mine.

Makes two (2) placemats trimmed to approximately 18-1/2" x 12-1/2"

Materials:

  • Two (2) 20" x 14" cuts of fabric for backing.

  • Two (2) 20" x 14" pieces of batting.

  • (16) 2-1/2" x 14" strips of fabric (use a variety of prints) for top of placemats.

  • Three (3) strips of 2-1/2" x 42" cuts of fabric for binding.

Batting, Backing, strips & binding

Directions:

Divide your batting in the middle and draw a line down the center.

Draw a line down the center (should be 10" from each side)

Take your first strip and place it next to the line Right Side UP.

Place the second strip on top of the first, Right Sides Together.

First strip right side up and second strip right sides together!

Sew with a quarter inch seam allowance- does not need to be perfect for this project!

Press after each strip is added. A walking foot is very helpful. I used the attached walking foot that comes with my Bernina 750 at first, but quickly changed to my super walking foot.

Love my waking foot. Makes sewing through layers a breeze.

Makes sewing through the layers so much easier.

Sew a 1/4" seam

You will continue adding strips until you reach the edge. When you have one side completed, turn the piece around and add strips to the other side.

Don't worry, sides will be wonky, you will trim when finished.

After finishing sewing strips, trim to desired size.

Trim using a rotary cutter and ruler.

Add binding, I used 2-1/4" strips on the first placemat, but it was a little scant, so I used 2-1/2" strips on the second placemat and it was much easier to turn and sew. You now have two easy to create placemats that make great gifts and look wonderful on the table.

Makes a great gift!

Super simple project that you can knock out in just an afternoon!

Happy Quilting,

Jen
